Alêtheia: An Anthology to the Goddess Of Individual Truths

Alêtheia: The Goddess of Individual Truth Revealed

Connecting with Aletheia this month has been truly synchronous with the medicine that many of our fabulous students, followers, and collaborators have needed. The Goddess in this form has been a medicine bringer of clarity and deeper self-understanding in the context of personal truth. She is the one who can help us reach through the gate of dreams. This place is where our unconscious messages to self and from the divine muse are revealed, and she assists us in pulling them into consciousness.

These messages, these are the ones that have life-altering, healing, and discerning abilities.

Discernment

Meeting her at the gates was a journey of discernment, of understanding what is revealed through her opening the gates to our truth. Indeed, Aletheia etymologically means the state of not being hidden. The lessons from Aletheia do not just stop with our own authentic truths or discerning the meanings. It spirals outwardly, our ability to discern truth from others growing stronger the more we practice connecting to her energy. Truth revealed through inner intuitive connections grows in leaps and bounds once we have journeyed to meet her. In fact, much like truth coming out of her well, we find ourselves with an ability to claw our own way up and out to exactly what we need.

This ability is a potent form of magic that allows us to see ourselves and others clearly, even when the truth revealed is bitter to the taste.

Correspondences & Lineage

The Goddess Aletheia has an amazing sense of humor but also one that requires us to think critically. She can be amazingly difficult to research, however, I don’t believe this to be unfortunate. She doesn’t want us to know her through the view of research. She wants to build our gnosis on an individual level of perception. Because truth is also based on perception, the correspondences detailed below are based on our (Ivy & Kaycee) abilities to perceive and translate the energy into correspondences. We have used these correspondences to attune to and journey with her successfully.

  • Element: Air, Earth
  • Planet: Mercury
  • Number: 2
  • Stone: Quartz, Flourite
  • Moon Phase: Full
  • Lineage: Father: Zeus

Digging Deep with Alêtheia

In all of our workings, one must truly use discernment as a means to reach those deepest of truths. Some of the discoveries we make are for us and us alone. The “to be silent” that our own teachers and mentors instilled in us. Knowing when the creative ideas and endeavors fall under that tenet can be tricky, for many reasons.

When we happen upon an idea that sets us on fire, we WANT to share. First, take a deep breath. Next, write it down in the greatest detail possible. DGC started as a much smaller endeavor and then grew exponentially from there each time we spoke about it. Spend time revising and refining. What seems like a good idea first thing in the morning may end up being a cog in the overall idea that, in a week, doesn’t seem quite as feasible.

We all have people in our lives that we trust implicitly. Once you have a good handle on what you hope to achieve, talk to those one or two people that will be honest with you. Not everything should be laid out for the masses. As much as there are energy vampires, there are also those who will take your ideas and run with them. Listen to the Divine. If they’re steering you away from someone/thing, it’s with good reason.

Sigilcraft

Sigil by Ivy

As with all of our Goddesses, I tend to practice sigilcraft. It helps me to connect with the deeper themes of the areas which they hold dominion over. The one above, should you choose to use it, will help with connecting to her on a much deeper level.

Looking at yourself and your relationships

It is important to be honest with yourself about what you will allow in your life. Setting boundaries is not just healthy, but necessary. Revisiting those boundaries, from time to time, is important. This includes not allowing negative self-talk. Thoughts are part of the basis of effective magic, they can become self-fulfilling prophecies very quickly.

When it comes to those in your life, who try to breach the boundaries you’ve set for yourself, speak up. No is a complete sentence. You do not need to have a reason why. Only you can look out for your complete well-being.

Veritas and Truth

Veritas is considered to be the Roman equivalent of Aletheia, however, ‘Veritas’ has made its way into multiple prestigious institutions as a motto (such as Harvard and Yale). The meaning of the word is “Truth”, and it is here that I pause. While I understand the idea behind reaching for truth (or attending such prestigious institutions in search of it), hidden deeply within those institutions and the philosophical context is an ideology and it has made its way into corporate jargon as well.

While I understand the sentiment here, there is deeper context at play, Christianity was historically and is still about how to be the human that the societal structures in power believe we need to be. Being human is what we are, we don’t need a lesson on how to be what we are already born as – or do we? What I do know is that the Christian text contains magic, spells, and rituals that are deemed good (of course they can’t call it this) while all other magic is ‘bad’ or ‘satanic’. Image found on Google.

Saturnian Nature

Veritas is said to be a daughter of Saturn and looking at it from that aspect allows a deeper understanding of her nature in the context of ideologies. Saturn is restricted, enclosed in rings, and highly structured. On the edge of what is able to be seen. The social context of an ideology such as that which comes with a motto like “Veritas” reminds me that truth in this way is a state of control framed in a societal context of what is deemed good and right.

What is allowable by a higher chain of leadership that is calling the shots through power that has been taken.

It is not surprising that institutions of education (ability to control what is learned) or of theological beginnings (the path to the Divine and spirituality is through a different institution entirely, where another holier person is required to “get” a lesson or message) chose to use such a motto in reinforcing the power structure. That is not truth, at least, not in the way that truth has presented herself to me and through me.

Veritas by Raffaelle Monti from the cast collection at Crystal Palace London.

The Truth about Truth

While the Goddess Veritas is seen as the equivalent of the Goddess Aletheia, I assert they are not the same. Aletheia represents truth for what it is at an individual level. Take into consideration that truth, for any person, is nested within the context of individual perception. An example of this is two people who see the exact same event. When relating the versions of events to others, each person has a different version of the events that transpired even when it was the same event. Who is lying? Who is not telling the truth? They are both telling the truth. The truth is perceived.

Veritas is truth itself, many times depicted in art as the hidden and elusive reality of what is.

It is no surprise that other stories of conception and birth of Truth is that it is man-made from clay. It is not entirely wrong, historical texts and subsequent essays (Dallery, Scott & Roberts, 1992) indicate that the concept of truth as Veritas is man-made “thought configuration that links the Roman understanding of truth as defensive posit (veritas; cf. PL 69-79) to the representational rightness or rectitude, and finally to the Nietzchean analysis of the “justice”of truth as the self-assertion of a will to power (PL 77)”.

The Importance of Discernment

As witches, empaths, seers, healers, and critical thinkers, the ability to discern truth for magic is one of those base level requirements for powerful magic. If we cannot tap into the energy or see the energy/essence clearly, our magic is only working at the level of what we can discern. This is also why “know thyself” is important because it considers our biases, our personal journey, and that which can cloud our ability to see. We must discern truth by pulling it forward, through the gate of unconsciousness into our own. The Goddess Aletheia is who to build this relationship with, she is great at guiding you to the gates.

The Side Eye

In conclusion, the use of Veritas in mottos in business, theological, and educational institutions of power will always get the side-eye. Whether it is because of historical forced indoctrination of people or to assert control, the evidence remains that certain ideologies are still oppressive in nature. It is not an individual right to truth, it is an ability to control others with truth that is man-made. When it comes to truth, I will always choose to look behind what is presented, maybe Veritas and Aletheia are waiting for us to pierce the veil.

Truth and The Full Moon

The practice of magic starts with intent, but under the surface there is a different question. What do you want? Building our magic and practice truly starts by knowing what we want. Paired with our ability to connect to and build relationships with outside influences, we begin to affect impactful change within ourselves and our communities.

Photo By Bisakha Datta via Pexels

The Desire

Heading into the Full Moon, it is a reminder of wholeness. Being a Leo full moon, there is a much deeper resonance towards truth and wholeness if we feel into it deep enough. This is a time of asking ourselves the tough questions about what we want, learning to ask for it openly, and discernment of the truth behind our desires. Ultimately, we become empowered to authentically own who we are, what we want, and our magic begins to unfold from a place of wholeness. Lean in and look to the stars, they can help translate where you are and where you are going.

Wholeness Translated

This full moon is so encouraging! It is in Leo, the Lion, and it is ruled by the sun. The sun is the center of our solar system, and the full moon is reflecting a deeper, more intuitive feeling sense of what we desire at our own center. It is truly highlighting what we want and how to get there is found by looking to what else this full moon brings:

This full moon also has something else: Venus and Mars conjunction.

The story of the lovers is present, in relationship with each other, the two halves coming together. Wholeness, Fullness, Connectedness, and integration are all keys to curating intention into our magic. How do you intend to translate this wholeness into your magic and your life? How can you harness the power of this full moon?

Heart Opening Patch

This patch is a useful tool in the arsenal of the witch. Used in conjunction with specific plant allies, stone allies, and Astro timing, we can sink deeply into our own awareness of our desires. In nearly every use case that I have gotten feedback on, this patch has been able to foster clarity surrounding intention, the underlying desire, and how to open the heart to connect in wholeness with that desire.

We find a path to our Muse, to connect with our inspiration and creativity, and to birth collaboratively from a place of truth.

What you’ll need:

  • Black Sacred Candle (or anything you use to prepare space where you work magic)
  • Cheese Cloth (or gauze)
  • Living Water (snow, rain, spring)
  • Tigers Eye
  • Rose Quartz
  • Lavender
  • Saffron
  • Eyebright
  • Star Anis
  • Two stackable bowls

Preparation Process (On the day of the Full Moon is preferable)

  1. Take one bowl and place the Rose Quartz and Tigers Eye in the center. We want these two stones to connect love and action.
  2. Place the other bowl on top. In this bowl place your cheese cloth (or gauze). Put a small amount of living water in with it, just enough to fully saturate but not cover it.
  3. Place the dried herbs on top of the cheese cloth and fold over or cover with another piece of cheese cloth.
  4. At dusk, put the bowls outside or on a windowsill to allow the full moon energy to permeate the patch for at least 30 minutes.

Patch Use

On the night of the full moon, after the patch has been energized by the moon, it is ready for use. Prepare your space as you would usually and make sure you have at least 30 minutes to use the patch and journal about any flashes of insight after.

To begin, grab:

  1. The bowls with stones and the patch
  2. A mat to lay on (or in your bed) and a blanket.
  3. Set up the music: I recommend listening to shamanic drumming or this to get into the space of awareness.
  4. Carefully grab the patch out of one bowl and the stones from the other as you lay down. Place the patch at your heart center and place the stones on top. Cover up with your blanket.
Photos by Kaycee Reeves
Process:

Listen to the music and breathe deeply. Close your eyes or soften your gaze. In your mind’s eye picture the energy of the patch seeping through your skin to your heart. The energy swirls there and your heart opens like a flower.

Revealed here is your true desire.

Your true inspiration.

Sit with it.

Allow your breath to return to normal. Allow your true desire and inspiration to permeate your entire being. The energy swirls throughout your body, contacting every cell, allowing intention and clarity to rise to the mind. Breathe deeply again, drawing the energy back to the heart center. Allow it to continue to swirl and provide insight. When you are ready, wiggle your fingers and toes, open your eyes and come back to present. Remove the patch and stones. Journal about your experience and insights. Keep your journal next to your bed as more may come to the surface during the dream time.

Ivy’s Spitfire corner – Podcast

When you need to brain dump

Somedays, we have a lot to say and no place it really fits. That has been my week! So we came up with a way to speak it, get it out there, and let it do what it will in the Universe. This 1st episode, I had no plan going in. There were just things that felt they needed a voice.

It’s real, it’s raw, it’s truth.

The Gate of Dreams: Reaching Alêtheia

A part of the work we are doing for February 2022 is connecting to the Goddess Alêtheia. Our Black Sacred Candle for the month serves as a conduit through which we can reach the Gate of Dreams that she stands at. Utilizing the Pylê Oneirôn incense blend, our Black Sacred Candle for the month creates instant sacred space for magic too!

It is said that she is waiting at the gate of dreams from which we will pull through our own truths (Philostratus the Elder, Imagines 1. 27 as referenced by Theoi Project).

Never created a Black Sacred Candle? We have you covered! Learn how in this free three-part series.

Correspondences

  • Lavender
  • Eyebright
  • Yarrow
  • Sage
  • Myrrh
  • Mugwort

I began by drawing twin torches as the gates through which we will connect deeply with our ability to traverse the space between the gates of conscious and unconscious dreams. Sage, Mugwort, and Myrrh are the sacred space trio of cleansing, protecting, and banishing. Lavender is a great tool to slow down, which helps open ourselves to a deeper awareness. Eyebright is an ally of sight (especially for truth) and being able to see beyond. Yarrow is great for awareness, courage, and strength which is helpful when we understand the truths we are seeking are of the upper and lower worlds.

Additional Items for creating your BSC:

  • Aluminum foil (we will be using the oven to get the candle warm so items will stick)
  • Non-stick parchment paper

Directions

  1. Take a piece of aluminum foil (large enough to wrap your candle in) and place it on your workspace.
  2. Take a piece of non-stick parchment paper (about the same size as your aluminum foil) and place it on top of the aluminum foil. Trick: Fold the edges of the aluminum foil over the top of the edges of the parchment paper to keep it from rolling!
  3. Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
  4. Anoint your candle with your chosen oil.
  5. Lightly coat your candle with the Pylê Oneirôn incense you created. Caution: Please make sure there are no large chunks of plant material as these can be dangerous or ‘pop’ during candle burning. As always, please abide by all fire safety rules.
  6. Place your candle onto the parchment/aluminum foil, wrap your candle, and place in the oven.
  7. DO NOT LEAVE THE KITCHEN (lesson learned the hard way), turn your candle every 2 minutes (this took me about 12 minutes total).

Incense

Pylê Oneirôn: An Alêtheia Incense

To connect with the Goddess Alêtheia, we are connecting with the energy of what is being revealed from hidden places within. It is said that she is waiting at the gate of dreams from which we will pull through our own truths (Philostratus the Elder, Imagines 1. 27 as referenced by Theoi Project).

‘Pylê Oneirôn’ means the gate of dreams and this is the incense that will allow us to connect with (and pull through the dream gates into consciousness) that which we dream of or desire to make reality. Our incense for February 2022 is an incense that I have been playing with for a few weeks now and it is potent (put some in a little bag under your pillow and find out!).

Ingredients:

  • Lavender
  • Eyebright
  • Yarrow
  • Sage
  • Myrrh
  • Mugwort

As with all incense, each ingredient brings a specific and special energy to the blend. Take a moment with each herb, connect with it, and invite it into the mix. Play with this blend and find the amounts of each that work for you. Make enough to burn through the month and to add to this month’s Black Sacred Candle.

Embracing Aletheia

After rising from Cerridwen’s Cauldron, we are embracing the Goddess Aletheia in February 2022. This Greek Goddess allows us to embrace her energy in our revealing and disclosure of truth, sincerity, and authenticity through discernment. While challenging in some aspects, Aletheia is not truth itself. She is the liminal Goddess that guides the path between our ability to comprehend that which is being disclosed and how we can use it in our quest of a life full of magic, passion, and purpose.

The Month of February

Theme: Veritas

Veritas is considered the Roman equivalent of Aletheia. Here we specifically seek to comprehend the changes taking place in society and the way that Veritas is being used in a social context.

Our Goddess: Aletheia

Aletheia, a daughter of Zeus or possibly Prometheus, is a Goddess of disclosure. She reveals to us that which we must know on our path and our ability to discern the way forward authentically.
