Eris Altar and Storm Blend

Honoring Eris & Yourself

Eris is, no doubt, a Goddess that requires you to go inward and face the storms within yourself. Humans are incredibly complex creatures, existing in both darkness and light. If you neglect one side of that duality, you’re living in a place of deep denial. I have found more healing in shadow than the light has ever led me to find.

This month, for me, has been about finding my way THROUGH the storms. If your immediate reaction to difficulties is to try to find a way around them, it will only mean that you will face the storm again. Avoidance is never the answer.

I know others have had similar issues over the last few weeks, so I came up with a bowl blend to help you through it.

FACING THE STORM HERBAL BLEND

I used a glass candle lid and added my herbs and stones to a base of salt.

To ease anxiety – Passionflower
To receive blessings – Mistletoe
To deal with challenges – Peppermint
To receive comfort – Peridot
Confidence – Citrine
To feel in control – Cedar
For a constant guardian – Dandelion
To feel more secure – Cinnamon
For overall protection – Tiger’s eye

Each morning, with my daily work, I would sit with the blend for a few minutes. Stirring it with my index finger on my right hand. Releasing anything that seemed to be holding me back and absorbing all of the properties of the herbs and stones. This allowed me to face the day with confidence. At all other times, it remained on my altar.

You could easily use this blend all the time. I would just suggest that on the Dark/New Moon, you start over fresh. Thanking the herbal and stone spirits who have helped guide you over the previous moon cycle.

Setting the Altar

Devotional Altars really help us to focus and pull in the energy of the Divine. They help us to connect with our Deities, to build relationships with them. Without a relationship to them, our workings can suffer.

Goddesses are so much more than their correspondences. Reducing them to said correspondences is an insult. Just as you are so much more than what appears on the surface, so are they. One of the many beautiful things about Eris, is there is no such “list”. It is through our own intuition that we discover how to work with her. Through our visits to the Garden of Gateways.

Through my own workings

I discovered many beautiful things regarding our Beloved Eris.

I fell in love with Jumping Spiders several years ago. Not even making the connection between them and the Goddess Eris. Yet here I am now seeing the woven web she’s been laying out for me for many, many years.

When I began to work on her sigil, including a spider was a natural thing for me to do. Using discernment is so important in the work we do as Witches. I often ask myself, “Are those Ravens/Vultures/etc. Here with a message for me? Or are they just doing what they do?” You would be surprised how many times it’s the latter. The wings represent higher consciousness. Reaching for that knowledge that can take us to new ways of being.

Once the sigil was complete, I decided a spider needed more prominence in the work. So I added a spider used for floral arrangements. My herbal blend got added to it after that. These items alone were enough. Yet I felt a drive to add Fluorite. While this is one of my absolute favorite stones, as I sat with it I dove deeper than I probably ever have with her.

Remember the storms & chaos? Fluorite is an incredibly effective stress reliever. It helps us to center, in the midst of those personal storms, so we may find the way through. The meaningful way through, so that the storm doesn’t return.

Using this altar has brought an enlightenment from her wisdom that has carried me through the storm. Challenges will always arise. It is part of daily life sometimes. Now, I have the tools to look at them objectively, decide for myself if the battle is worth fighting, and facing it like the warrior I know myself to be.

The Storms We Face

In the northern hemisphere, the wheel is turning to Spring and in what seems like a great synchronicity, the great storms have arrived. On a global level, the storms continue to rock us all. From national economic crises to pandemic recovery to the war in Ukraine, we are all impacted. Witches across the globe understand that death and destruction pave the way for rebirth and growth, but what about the storms we face individually? At the center of the storm, how can we navigate it thoughtfully and in a way that is not more destructive than necessary?

A Lesson from Pisces & Aries

We are leaving Pisces season behind, the deep waters, and moving into Aries. They come bearing messages of the season of storms if for no other reason than to provide insight into where we are right now.

If the waters of life are always still and calm, they turn murky and stagnant. There is no movement beyond where we are right now. It is the chaos of storms that move us forward or backward or pivot us depending on our ability to adjust our internal sails of awareness. This awareness allows us to break through our own desire for things to remain the same.

This is rebirth energy, the energy that allows us to connect with our divine inner spark that urges toward our deeper purpose, our passions, and magic.

Awareness & Acceptance

One of the most pivotal points we can reach when facing our storms is just the awareness of it. That we are in the center of it and must lean into it. That is when we start to acknowledge or accept it for what it is. Does it mean we deserve the storms and chaos we are facing? No. Does it still play a role in our journey? Yes. This acceptance of the parts we play during the storm clears the way for us to clearly define the things we can control. We cannot control the storm, we can only control ourselves and our actions.

Actions

Using witchcraft to navigate the storms we face is a great way to understand how strategic actions and daily practices build our ability to influence and withstand the storms we face. During the storms, here are some of the witchcraft practices that have helped build awareness, acceptance, and clarify actions to take:

  • Automatic writing: getting into the space to receive messages from the divine and letting it flow.
  • Daily Tarot Card: “What will help me navigate what I am facing today?”
  • Journal prompt: “What is this giving me a chance to learn?”
  • Transmute: Pump the BRAKES when the storms are overwhelming.
  • Lighting our Black Sacred Candle to Eris

We may not come away completely unscathed, but we do know how to grow in our power and direct it through our practice of witchcraft. May our collective journeys be a force to reckon with as we rise to the occasion.

Altar Work: Sigil To Eris

Crafting the Devotional Altar – The Sigil

At this point, we’ve all made our Eris Awareness Oil and we’ve been using it on a regular basis. To bring awareness to Eris’ presence. Also our Black Sacred Candle has been made and we’ve been burning it for a few minutes each day. If you have allowed yourself to be open to her messages, she has brought wisdom to you. In working with her with genuine truth-seeking, she is a deep ally.

Now is the time to begin building a devotional altar to her. My next article we will talk more about that. For now, it’s time to craft your sigil. My process is different than most and can vary from day to day. One of the symbols of Eris is a golden Apple. Apples can also be used as offering. She was pretty clear in where she was leading me.

As I began drawing her in to work on her sigil, I felt called to the web. The one that we as Witches and humans weave among our social circle and our communities. When I went searching, I found something quite interesting. I have always adored a sweet little 8-legged friend in the Salticidae family of spiders. Which is a genus of jumping spiders, known as Eris.

How sweet is this little guy?

As I was drawing the sigil, a spider appeared on the apple and it was absolutely perfect! Her name keeps us rooted and the wings help us to take flight. The underworld AND the upperworld workings are both required to make the profound discoveries that are our truth and our healing.

Sigil by Author

You can choose to draw your own sigil, or you can use mine as a model. I will say, the more of us that use the collective sigil, the stronger it becomes in y/our workings. Once you have created it, anoint it with your awareness oil, pass it through the smoke of your black sacred candle, and set it upon your altar to charge. 24 hours should be plenty of time for you to begin working with it.

The Black Sacred Candle: Storm Bringer

Working with Eris as Storm Bringer, as a daughter of Night, can fill us with apprehension or with fear. Those are old stories of the men who fear women and need someone to blame for their misfortune and ignorant choices.

I said what I said.

Now we are going to hear her story.

The Black Sacred Candle

The Black Sacred Candle this month is not only to protect your magic and space, but to allow a deeper connection to the energy of Eris as storm bringer. This connection is important to our craft and to the knowing of ourselves. We carry this same energy and can learn how to harness it to navigate ourselves through the storms of everyday life.

Never created a Black Sacred Candle? We have you covered! Learn how in this free three-part series.

Ingredients

Cinnamon and clove are important in this work because we are looking to draw in the abundance that comes from embracing the storms she reveals.

Additional Items Needed:

  • Small plate

Directions:

  1. Place the Candle on the small plate
  2. Pour about 1 tbsp of the Eris Awareness Oil on the top of the candle, allow it to drip down the sides.
  3. Using the cinnamon and clove, create a barrier surrounding the base of the candle and then sprinkle a small amount of each on the top.
  4. Using your hand, move the candle around the plate in a clockwise motion to cover the base of the candle in the cinnamon and clove.

Eris Awareness Oil

Eris, daughter of Nyx, is a Goddess of War and strife who has long been misunderstood. She teaches some of the greatest lessons through what appears to be absolute destruction and chaos. If we think about where we are right now in the season, you are witnessing that liminal space of what appears to be destruction:

  • The soil is in a state of upheaval as shoots of emerging plants burst forth
  • The winds, rains, and heavy storms that cause damage are life giving to the rest of the Earth
  • Dramatic changes in mood and energy levels as daylight hours become longer again – sometimes ‘scorched earth’ in relationships appear.

Awareness

The single most effective tool for weathering the storms and chaos is being aware of it. The best way to be aware is to lower the noise of the rest of the world and connect deeply with ourselves through grounding. This allows us to take an inventory of our inner landscape of thoughts and feelings prior to taking action. Action is not always necessary. Awareness is.

The Oil

The Eris Awareness Oil is an effective tool to not only get grounded for awareness of the things going on around us, but within us. It eases us into a calm awareness of that inner landscape that needs attention and creates the space for intentional, mindful understanding of it. It is also a great offering to Eris, it shows that we seek to understand through awareness of what she brings instead of what we have been told. As a daughter of Nyx, she can show us the way forward through obstacles because she will bring them to light.

Ingredients (please make sure to research contraindications prior to use of any plant allies):

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Blue Vervain
  • Dandelion Root
  • Damiana

Blue Vervain and Damiana are extremely strong plant allies, in my experience it is important to direct these two very specifically to work in partnership with each other to bring calm inner awareness of personal inner states of being. Dandelion Root will help root this into our consciousness, providing us with the ability to go deeper. It is this going deeper that allows us to rise to taller.

Directions:

After giving specific directions to each herb, get a very small jar or vial (with a lid) and put a pinch or so of each herb in it. Add the Extra Virgin Olive Oil until the herbs are covered and ask for it to draw out that which you seek and that which you need. Place it in a dark spot for 3 days, visiting each day and shaking it to greet them. In the jar looks like chaos, but we are drawing the best of the plant allies out. Just like they are working with Eris to do the same for you.

After day 3, place on your altar as an offering to Eris – a symbol of your intention to work with her.

Eris: A look Ahead

Eris: The Greek Goddess of Strife and Discord

For March, we’re going to face some of our own shadow and root out the areas or our life where chaos rules supreme. To live a more balanced life, we have to face the areas of our lives that keep harmony from allowing us to just be at one with it all.

Eris is a daughter of the Night Goddess, Nyx. While she is a Goddess of War, the biggest war we fight is often within ourselves. We can go around it, but until you walk through it, you will never find the peace that comes afterwards. She is going to challenge you. This is the way that we grow into the beautiful souls we’re meant to be!

Theme: The Storms We Face

Throughout our lives, we all face the storms of hardship and self-doubt. With the help of Eris, we can discover the tools to weather those storms.

Our Goddess: Eris

The Greek Patron Saint of Discordia is one of the daughters of Nyx. Much like her mother, she has deep, deep wisdom but you must face the darkness within.

Sneak Peeks for March

  • Oil
  • Altar
  • Sigil
  • Our Monthly Black Sacred Candle
  • The Storms We Face
  • Guided Journey

Other work

As the Month progresses, we may find ourselves led to other work through the Goddess.
