Lilith, Whore of Babylon, or Beacon of sovereignty?

Lilith – Whore of Babylon or Beacon of Sovereignty?

Here at Dark Goddesses Collective, we believe everything is divine timing. Sometimes, a Goddess seeks to be featured in a given month and we just roll with it. The reasons become clear as the months move along. We set our monthly Goddess/theme in December and, while some months don’t go to plan, others do. Which brings us to July and what June wrought upon us.

Chaos. Women’s reproductive rights and body sovereignty is being decimated over here in the states. You may be feeling rage, hopelessness, fear and each of those is incredibly valid. Feel them in their entirety, then stand up and use them to fight back. This month, we are going to stand boldly in our sovereignty and all that entails.

They will tell you such nonsense as, “Lilith is a demon. Lilith is the mother of demons. Lilith defied Adam.” She may be and she may have, but does it matter? What she really was, was the first to refuse to upset the natural order of things. She was sovereign. Her refusal to bow to the patriarchy is what we all must draw upon. They have taken her story, they have defiled it and WE are taking it back.

Lilith was originally from Sumeria. Like many of the Goddesses we have or will touch upon. She is the Rebel, a Seductress, a Goddess of Sacred Sex, she is our wild feminine and brings the wind and storms. Do you see a common theme here? Of Serpents & Storms being the parents company of DGC and RAW is no accident.

So what will this month bring you, the Wild Women and Witches? Are you ready to take back control of your own life, your own pleasure, and your own sexuality? That’s what we’re doing. Are you ready to fight for your sovereignty in a world that wishes to relegate you back to being submissive? We’ve got you covered.

The Serpent in the Storm

Of Serpents & Storms

Maybe you have noticed the hashtag over at Revelations of a Witch and here at Dark Goddesses Collective or maybe you have not – either way, Of Serpents & Storms is what we are made of.

Rise, Witch, Rise

Being made of serpents and storms is a divine initiation into some of life’s greatest mysteries and the mysteries unique to each of us. The serpent, with the ability to transform and grow with each shedding of its skin as well as the ouroboros as the cycle of life, speaks to an energetic nature that lives within. The storms we face create an atmosphere that is both creative and destructive, without it we would stagnate and decay. In the grand ecology of our own lives, being made of serpents and storms is the willingness to rise.

When the Storms Rage

Make no mistake, there are deeply seated and pervasive storms raging. This is true for our inner world and the outer world. There is a need for change on many fronts. Ivy and I are, have been, and always will be proponents for change that have positive impacts on society and on this Earth. We know where we have the greatest impact to promote change and that is why Dark Goddesses Collective was born. To begin the journey of creating a community that wants to do the work that will impact change. Instead of watching the storms rage from the outside, we rise. We become the storm instead of watching with fear on the sidelines. Connecting to that energy requires that we also become aware of the inner storms we face. Of Serpents & Storms is here to do that in a unique way with one of a kind solutions and products.

The backbone of it all

Kaycee and I are HUGE proponents of selfcare, of using the gifts the mothers give us to lead ourselves back to center. There is nothing quite like having a day where it all seems to just fall apart and realizing it’s time to take back control. To pivot, if you will.

This was never more clear than a few months back, when I was having a moment and could NOT bring myself out of the mindset of, what really was, imposter syndrome. Kaycee, being the rock that she is, told me to get a few herbs, run a bath, place those herbs in the water and let them do what they are meant to do.

We all know that herbs in the bath are wonderful, but the cleanup can be a nightmare. So I grabbed a little tulle bag, stuffed it with herbs and tossed it into the water. Within minutes, I was back to myself. I could breathe, I could think and I was free of those thoughts that come to us all sometimes, unbidden. That was probably the moment I realized, there’s something here.

We have decided to create a line of bath products for the stressed out Witch. For the Witches that find themselves in that headspace of “not good enough” (which is utter bullshit anyway). However, we have discussed it and come to the conclusion that we want to be different. OS&S will not be sold online, for now anyway. The only way to get your hands on our products will be in person.

Photo by Ivy Laine. Only a small sample of what we’ve conjured up.

We’re here to help the working Witch take care of themselves, while at the same time doing something we enjoy. The first products will be available as a raffle basket at The Witchy High Tea in Concord, NC on June 5th. There will be other vending events in the future, but to give you an idea of what is being created see a partial list below.

Bath Teas in reusable bags
Bath Teas in biodegradeable paper tea bags
Bath Salts with various herbs for specific purposes in tulle bags
Mojo Bags for Protection, Sleep, etc.
Glass 4oz. Jars of teas, salts, blends with an adorable little spoon and a reusable tulle bag
Mini Altar Tins (which is something I’ve been making for a decade)
BSC with specific purposes in mind
Bath Bombs/Dust
Sugar Scrubs for ritual cleansing

As you can see, we really want Witches to have products geared toward them and the work they do. As we get closer to Samhain, I have ideas for salts and teas to help connect you with your ancestors. We love our community and this is the way we are working to give back. To help guide you through the storms as the serpent sheds her skin. To be born anew.

Goddess Medusa Overview for May

For the month of May, here at DGC, we’re diving DEEP with the Gorgon Queen herself, Medusa. She was one of 3 Gorgon sisters and a Priestess of Athena. Until Poseidon decided to violate her sovereignty of self and she was “punished” for his transgressions. I, however, don’t believe that to be entirely true. The patriarchy’s narrative is so insidious in the myths of strong, powerful women. Getting to the truth of the matter can be incredibly tricky. I have spent years attempting to unravel the lies we’ve been told.

Medusa Spirit Doll by Silvia’s Spirits Gifted to me by Kaycee Reeves. Photo by me.

Many accept, at face value, that Medusa is Greek. The depiction of her, at the Temple of Hadrian in Syria, says otherwise. Syria was a vital part of the Silk Road. Which means stories were able to travel long distances from their places of origin. We, as modern day practitioners, have to follow clues to discover what’s accurate. Listening to the Goddesses (for me she IS a Goddess) as they tell their stories, brings us closer to what has been obscured by smoke, mirrors, and blatant lies.

Tiamat Mother Dragon – An Anthology

Tiamat

The primordial essence of Tiamat, based on the timeframe of the stories we have relating to her, occur during the timeframe when patriarchal society was on the rise. The story of Marduk slaying Tiamat as a prime example of the story where the ability to overthrow the power of the feminine was sure to rise one into ‘King’ status. The thing about Tiamat and her lessons is that she is not slain. She simply understood her realm across land, sea, and sky enough to when to sink, swim, or soar. She teaches us the same.

Photo by Luis Zheji via Pexels

Sink, Swim, or Soar

Understanding our inner and outer landscape is helpful when working with Tiamat. She is going to bring the challenges to the surface and make you face them head on. Sometimes that requires sinking in or sitting with the various things that come up during this time. The ability to deeply connect and contemplate the lesson being presented can be a key to opening the vault of opportunities that await us.

Sometimes, we must tread water. That is the lesson: learning how to keep our heads above water is about our ability to persevere during our greatest challenges. And she will absolutely bring those up for us because it is a reminder that we too shall not be slain, just transformed.

To soar is about taking the calculated risks that make us slightly uncomfortable. This is not about fearlessness, it is teaching us to be fearsome. To be emboldened and claim what is rightfully ours. To learn to trust ourselves and our ability to rise to the occasion, children with the blood of dragons in their veins.

I seek upon your wings
The lessons just for me

My Own Experience with Tiamat, Primordial Mother

A lot of the work I did with Tiamat was done while I was submerged in water. Bath teas and Bath Salts helped to heighten my experiences. She will lead you where you need to go. Even if, at times, it’s frightening. The first time I worked with her, surrounded by water, it really was an initiation. I am used to being surrounded by fire or in meadows. Tiamat though, she is different in many ways, so being surrounded by deep water was new to me.

At first, I desperately tried to swim for the surface. I could sense her amusement as she reminded me that I was safe. It was not done with even a hint of malice. She knew I needed a deep dive to shed myself of situations and ways of being to reach closer to wholeness. Once I had calmed down, she began to speak. Sharing with me the deep wisdom that only the Primordial Goddesses have to bestow. They have watched the world from the beginning. The cycles repeat more often than we can comprehend.

Photo by Francesco Ungaro on Unsplash

A good example of that, is the birth/death/rebirth cycle. In order to grow into what we are meant to become, we shed our skin many times over the course of our journey. She reminds us that our rage is valid. Not only is it valid, it is necessary. Change only comes when we recognize the rage that lives within us all. Injustice will present itself in a myriad of ways. Tapping into the wisdom that is Tiamat helps us to facilitate positive change.

Be warned though, without grounding/centering/releasing you will find yourself walking in rage. Hence our Soothe the Dragon Bath Tea is a lovely way to soothe her and ourselves.

I visited the briny deep with her as my touchstone so many times over the course of April. Each time, I found myself more at ease. Able to sit with her and listen to what I needed to know. Tiamat is a loving mother and a fierce protector. She demands we do the work to better ourselves, even when doing so may cause us to break and mend over and over.

Soothe the Dragon Bath Tea

Soothe the Dragon Bath Tea

We have done a lot of work with Tiamat this month and, no doubt, there have been moments that have felt overwhelming. How many times have we told ourselves that we need to be practicing selfcare? Do you know what selfcare looks like in times like these? Where you are so overwhelmed? Where the Divine has messages that you must hear right this second?

What if I told you that it’s almost as simple as “Get in the tub”? It is, but with a twist.

Photo by Hanna Postova @ Unsplash

I created this blend as I was working on a raffle prize for a local event happening in June. There are few measurements aside from the ancestors telling me when to stop. It ended up creating an entire quart jar, which I will use going forward. The items you need, you probably already have in your Apothecary.

What you need:

Chamomile
Rose Petals
Yarrow
Lavender
Salt (Epsom, Himalayan or Sea Salt works best. Use what you have.)
Mugwort
Drawstring teabags or Tulle bags to contain the plant material and make cleanup easy
A large bowl

I sat down with my herbs, bowl and bags and set out to work.

Add as little or as much as you feel called to add. The Mugwort I would go light on, because it can bring about visions. Visions while in water can be a bit tricky.

I added my herbs in the order above then mixed them with clean, dry hands. The colors and textures were just lovely to the touch. I use a stainless steel bowl, as it’s easily cleaned.

Aren’t those colors just gorgeous?

Once I felt it was mixed enough by closing my eyes and just being present, I got my bags and set to work filling them. A few teaspoons is all you need. You can do this ahead of time and bag up the entire bowl into your bags if you like. I would just caution that they need to go into an airtight container of some sort.

Once you’re done, they’ll look something like this, depending on the bags you’re using.

How to use your Soothe the Dragon Bath Tea:

When you wish to soothe the dragon, hang one of these so the water runs over the bag as you fill the tub. Then, luxuriate in the water for as long as you need. Once you’re done, you can either toss the entire bag, or wait for it to dry and dump the used herbs and reuse the bag.

It really is an incredible way to calm the mind. Let me know your experiences with crafting the tea and how it helps you to recenter and calm the storm that rages from time to time.

Eris: An Anthology to Great Storms

Eris, A Great Storm Goddess

She asked me:

How long have I been blamed for their corrupt and poor choices?

How long have they blamed me to glorify their bad decisions?

The Goddess of Storms and Strife is sipping the fruit of life that she will tear from them when they refuse to listen…

As we all are: She is sick of their shit.

Photo by Nikolas Noonan via Unsplash

As a Daughter Of Nyx, the Night, she has been blamed for the storms of men, but sitting with this great Goddess has proven that ‘storm bringer’ is not her purpose. She comes during storms, but she is not the bringer of them, we do that well enough. It is she, in fact, that in the darkest of storms, is there to guide us to the path that we cannot see. She helps us with both hands, to rise above the storms, to force us to climb higher. It is she that creates our ability to rise with great strength and perseverance until we learn to withstand any storm.

Eris on an Attic plate, ca. 575–525 BC, Found on Wikipedia

In Alliance with Humanity

Eris is present with the great storms that face humanity. She has watched the impending storms grow larger, but she waits for us and the storm. Eris seeks to unite us when we are facing the dark and facing great destruction. She finds a way to bring about our strength in numbers and in service to each other. We each begin to grow individually, but we also grow together in a time meant to be divisive.

Photo via Pixabay

Until she doesn’t. She is willing to take the blame and let us learn the hard way for she knows that sometimes that is the only way to learn. After destruction comes growth, she knows the cycle well. She will push this cycle forward as required, even in the midst of chaos she will bring about creation of something new for us all.

Correspondences:

  • Element: Fire
  • Planet: Mars, Pluto
  • Zodiac: Aries, Scorpio
  • Number: 1, 9
  • Tarot: Tower
  • Stone: Quartz, Onyx, Red Jasper (although to really sink into the relationship, fluorite is amazing)
  • Moon Phase: Dark Moon
  • Lineage: Mother: Nyx
  • Fruit: Golden Apple

Facing the Storm Within

Building a relationship with Eris has been a test of wills. She is absolute chaos. However, that chaos is not just for the sake of it. It is a lesson in determination.

A year ago, the personal storm blew in. It has ebbed and flowed since then. There have been cord cuttings, banishings, binding and each of them has me standing a bit taller. There have even been tandem workings, that I feel finally severed a hold I no longer wanted. Some people don’t want to let go, even when the rift was of their making. As a Witch, I must heal myself before I can help others to heal.

Photo Via Pexels

Then, we must look further back. We are always a work in progress. I will be the first to admit that people have done some really shitty things to me and I allowed it to happen. When it comes to storms, we are the Captain of our own ship. We can turn into the chaos of raging seas, or we can turn away to safety.

The thing about that is the longer we avoid the chaos and storms, the longer it takes us to step into our own power. It is through Eris that I finally learned I have to stand in the midst of the churning waters and find my way through.

There are people I adore, who would never dream of bringing harm to me. We are bonded through more than this life. Yet we all expect for their to be some ulterior motive. That’s unfair. Not only to the people in our lives that we have chosen as family, but to ourselves. When we stand in truth, we see that clearly.

Do not expect that just because someone else was a shitty friend, that the people who stand strong beside you are the same. I have always expected to be tossed aside, it has happened so many times in the past. Eris reminded me that speaking when I feel certain ways eliminates the doubt and the fear. Which is exactly what I did. In the end, I discovered it was all unfounded.

When I am told I am loved, taking it at face value has quieted the storm. There is a certain power in being the one who wields the storms and chaos. It allows us to remove from our lives those who are not meant to be part of our story. It also gives us the resolve to stand in solidarity with those who are. To defend and protect ourselves and those we love.

The relationship I have built with Eris has given me the choice to either stand firmly rooted in the here and now. Or to reach for the upper world to draw upon the wisdom I already possess. She will, however, make you work hard to find a way through.

Going around the storm, once you connect with her, isn’t an option. The reward though makes it worth the late nights of pushing through. Knowledge, much like a dagger, when placed into capable hands, can bring forces that work against you to their knees. Treading carefully, as you are shown the wonders of the universe, is a wise choice.

Eris Altar and Storm Blend

Honoring Eris & Yourself

Eris is, no doubt, a Goddess that requires you to go inward and face the storms within yourself. Humans are incredibly complex creatures, existing in both darkness and light. If you neglect one side of that duality, you’re living in a place of deep denial. I have found more healing in shadow than the light has ever led me to find.

This month, for me, has been about finding my way THROUGH the storms. If your immediate reaction to difficulties is to try to find a way around them, it will only mean that you will face the storm again. Avoidance is never the answer.

I know others have had similar issues over the last few weeks, so I came up with a bowl blend to help you through it.

FACING THE STORM HERBAL BLEND

I used a glass candle lid and added my herbs and stones to a base of salt.

To ease anxiety – Passionflower
To receive blessings – Mistletoe
To deal with challenges – Peppermint
To receive comfort – Peridot
Confidence – Citrine
To feel in control – Cedar
For a constant guardian – Dandelion
To feel more secure – Cinnamon
For overall protection – Tiger’s eye

Each morning, with my daily work, I would sit with the blend for a few minutes. Stirring it with my index finger on my right hand. Releasing anything that seemed to be holding me back and absorbing all of the properties of the herbs and stones. This allowed me to face the day with confidence. At all other times, it remained on my altar.

You could easily use this blend all the time. I would just suggest that on the Dark/New Moon, you start over fresh. Thanking the herbal and stone spirits who have helped guide you over the previous moon cycle.

Setting the Altar

Devotional Altars really help us to focus and pull in the energy of the Divine. They help us to connect with our Deities, to build relationships with them. Without a relationship to them, our workings can suffer.

Goddesses are so much more than their correspondences. Reducing them to said correspondences is an insult. Just as you are so much more than what appears on the surface, so are they. One of the many beautiful things about Eris, is there is no such “list”. It is through our own intuition that we discover how to work with her. Through our visits to the Garden of Gateways.

Through my own workings

I discovered many beautiful things regarding our Beloved Eris.

I fell in love with Jumping Spiders several years ago. Not even making the connection between them and the Goddess Eris. Yet here I am now seeing the woven web she’s been laying out for me for many, many years.

When I began to work on her sigil, including a spider was a natural thing for me to do. Using discernment is so important in the work we do as Witches. I often ask myself, “Are those Ravens/Vultures/etc. Here with a message for me? Or are they just doing what they do?” You would be surprised how many times it’s the latter. The wings represent higher consciousness. Reaching for that knowledge that can take us to new ways of being.

Once the sigil was complete, I decided a spider needed more prominence in the work. So I added a spider used for floral arrangements. My herbal blend got added to it after that. These items alone were enough. Yet I felt a drive to add Fluorite. While this is one of my absolute favorite stones, as I sat with it I dove deeper than I probably ever have with her.

Remember the storms & chaos? Fluorite is an incredibly effective stress reliever. It helps us to center, in the midst of those personal storms, so we may find the way through. The meaningful way through, so that the storm doesn’t return.

Using this altar has brought an enlightenment from her wisdom that has carried me through the storm. Challenges will always arise. It is part of daily life sometimes. Now, I have the tools to look at them objectively, decide for myself if the battle is worth fighting, and facing it like the warrior I know myself to be.

Altar Work: Sigil To Eris

Crafting the Devotional Altar – The Sigil

At this point, we’ve all made our Eris Awareness Oil and we’ve been using it on a regular basis. To bring awareness to Eris’ presence. Also our Black Sacred Candle has been made and we’ve been burning it for a few minutes each day. If you have allowed yourself to be open to her messages, she has brought wisdom to you. In working with her with genuine truth-seeking, she is a deep ally.

Now is the time to begin building a devotional altar to her. My next article we will talk more about that. For now, it’s time to craft your sigil. My process is different than most and can vary from day to day. One of the symbols of Eris is a golden Apple. Apples can also be used as offering. She was pretty clear in where she was leading me.

As I began drawing her in to work on her sigil, I felt called to the web. The one that we as Witches and humans weave among our social circle and our communities. When I went searching, I found something quite interesting. I have always adored a sweet little 8-legged friend in the Salticidae family of spiders. Which is a genus of jumping spiders, known as Eris.

Photo by Egor Kamelev from Pexels

How sweet is this little guy?

As I was drawing the sigil, a spider appeared on the apple and it was absolutely perfect! Her name keeps us rooted and the wings help us to take flight. The underworld AND the upperworld workings are both required to make the profound discoveries that are our truth and our healing.

Sigil by Author

You can choose to draw your own sigil, or you can use mine as a model. I will say, the more of us that use the collective sigil, the stronger it becomes in y/our workings. Once you have created it, anoint it with your awareness oil, pass it through the smoke of your black sacred candle, and set it upon your altar to charge. 24 hours should be plenty of time for you to begin working with it.

Eris: A look Ahead

Eris: The Greek Goddess of Strife and Discord

For March, we’re going to face some of our own shadow and root out the areas or our life where chaos rules supreme. To live a more balanced life, we have to face the areas of our lives that keep harmony from allowing us to just be at one with it all.

Eris is a daughter of the Night Goddess, Nyx. While she is a Goddess of War, the biggest war we fight is often within ourselves. We can go around it, but until you walk through it, you will never find the peace that comes afterwards. She is going to challenge you. This is the way that we grow into the beautiful souls we’re meant to be!

Theme: The Storms We Face

Throughout our lives, we all face the storms of hardship and self-doubt. With the help of Eris, we can discover the tools to weather those storms.

Our Goddess: Eris

The Greek Patron Saint of Discordia is one of the daughters of Nyx. Much like her mother, she has deep, deep wisdom but you must face the darkness within.
