Her Story and Faces

Berchta is a Winter Goddess with many threads (and names!) throughout Germany, Austria, and the region of the Alps. There are still areas where some rituals to Berchta still take place even after her demonization by the Church.

She appears as either a veiled young woman (Perchta) with pearls woven into her hair or as a disfigured hag, with unruly hair and dirty clothing. As the young woman, she carries keys and mayflowers. As the old woman, she carries a distaff (for unspun wool). Her plant spirit allies are Holly, Mayflower, and Birch.

In Bavaria, she is one of the Leaders of the Wild Hunt. Leading the procession of those she protects, it is a Yule time procession of the ghosts of women, children, and animals. Other stories include her sovereignty over the fields, as Holda, Goddess of Abundance shaking the snow from herself over the ground that will allow the rebirth and abundance of the fields in Spring. Like many of our Dark Goddesses, she is a bridge between the living and the dead or the cycle of death and rebirth.

Perchta, Holda, Diana, Frigga, La Befana

The list of names and energetic similarities of this Winter Solstice Goddess expands through archeological discoveries by the likes of Marija Gimbutas and many other historians. From appearing with a Swan’s foot, as a Maiden or a Crone, to her demonization by the Church and slitting bellies if not properly behaved and consuming the right “meals”– Berchta and her conflations and sister Goddesses are here to teach us how to regain our own sovereignty through our renewal and rebirth.

Welcoming Berchta – Kaycee’s Experience

Like most other Goddesses, I was deeply intrigued by Berchta. Pre-Christian forms of Goddesses hold so many dualities, are all encompassing, but are historically demonized to control the populace instead of being beautiful stories explaining the seasons and highest connections to divinity. After creating the Berchta Candle, I set out to get to know her even in her darkest forms.

The Stomach Slicer

The stories of Berchta slicing open the stomach of those who didn’t leave the right food or who consumed it all and didn’t leave any for her caught my attention. When I connected with her about this story, this story was changed to inspire fear. In fact, the feeling was that her demonization led her to becoming the Stomach Slicer to free those who are being mercilessly controlled. She explained she is emptying the contents of what has been force fed to us so we can find our inner wisdom, our inner fire, our inner motivation, and purpose. This clearing out and imminent death allows the transformation of rebirth with the return of the solar fire, not just the celestial sun, but the fire within us.

Looking to 2022

Berchta asked me what I am cutting myself open for in 2022. I was taken aback, but she was very persistent with this question. How am I growing my fire? How can I expect this flame to grow without the space available for air to reach it? What must I carve out myself? She tossed her distaff at me, the end having a blade attached. She said this is also a key, I would know where to cut and where to weave when the time is right, but the time is approaching quickly. I look forward to continuing my work with the fierce love of Berchta!

My Journey with Berchta

2021 has seen many upheavals in all of our lives. We have lost loved ones through sickness, conspiracy, and growth. Mother Berchta has taken the pieces I could no longer hold and tossed them into the aether. I am grateful to her for doing so!

Image via Pinterest

I started the month knowing the shifting and cracking of bones was necessary. We are all remade over and over, if we allow that growth to lead us to all of the places and spaces meant to be ours. As I get older, I see shades of my own grandmother begin to appear. It was never more prevalent than this holiday season.

Kaycee has spoken about a tradition we started for ourselves this year that we’re affectionately calling Witchmas. It is her, myself and my dearest sister Wendy, we are the Witches Three. In all the years I’ve known these two lovely Witches, we hadn’t spent a December holiday together. That needed to change! With a plan hatched, my beloved checked maps and found a place of roughly equal distance for us all to travel to meet.

I began to plan gifts and Hygge became the theme. It was for all of us, without even knowing it. Selfcare during the busy holidays is a must. It’s not too late, head over to 12 days of Self Care and bring in the new year at peace.

This is where my beloved Gran came in. I crafted teas and cocoas, flavored sugars and mulling spices. Even charmed planner clips. I found an adorable Etsy shop or three and obtained the most luscious hand lotion, soap and shower gels.

Photo by allison christine on Unsplash

I’ll be the first to admit, I went overboard. Yet, Berchta sat with me as I crafted, nodding her head or showing me a better way, depending on what I was doing. I even made Wassail as an offering to her. Then sat with her and sipped it.

The Wisdom of Berchta

There are words of wisdom in the breeze and as I sit here, writing this, there is something I must pass along.

“You love so hard and so deeply that sometimes it gets you wounded. Those that are your tribe understand that. They will ALWAYS have your hand when you need them most. This world needs more of the souls that love that deeply.”

The people in my life, that have seen me at my best and my worst, and stayed anyway? Those are the people that carry a piece of me with them. Those that I come to with an idea and they say “Let’s figure out a way to do that!” They ARE my tribe.

Tonight, I will sit with Mother Berchta and release the things I didn’t know I still held.

I am forever grateful for her gentle nudges toward my own mother. For the first time ever, my gifts were something so truly me. It is only Berchta that I feel could have planted that seed.

She is wise.

She is caring.

She is the Mother.

She is me.

And she is all of you.

Building it Up

This is a free series from Dark Goddesses Collective and is a part of our December 2021 work. We believe that it is important to empower each other, this includes providing free information that provokes or encourages knowledge of self, of sovereignty, and that which builds intuition. Over the course of 12 days we will be building up a practice of selfcare that invites in the deeper knowledge of self and building up awareness of the importance of Full-hearted selfcare in our practices of magic.

We are building a network of Sovereigns too! Stay tuned!

12 Days of Selfcare ~ Day 10

Day 10 – Uplifted Spirit Scrub

Have you ever smelled something that instantly made the room seem a little brighter, our mood a little more carefree and relaxed? Some days we need to take all of our to do’s, our stress, our anxiety, and chuck them in the f*ck it bucket for half an hour. Today we are going to create a scrub to cleanse the body and uplift the spirit.

Supplies:

  • Jar with lid
  • ½ cup Sugar
  • 5 drops of Lavender Essential oil
  • 6 drops Bergamot Essential Oil
  • 3 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
  • ¼ cup Olive Oil

Directions:

Start with the sugar and olive oil and get to a consistency that you love, some prefer more or less sugar or more or less oil. All of the ingredients have a purpose and we want to intentionally give direction as we add them:

  • Sugar to sweetly reveal the layers needing more care
  • Olive Oil to protect the layers we are revealing
  • Lavender to build a calm awareness of the care we are reaching toward
  • Bergamot to uplift, bring joy and stability in our selfcare routine
  • Eucalyptus to re-center and focus on the now
Photo by Pavel Danilyuk from Pexels

Note: Feel free to use coconut oil instead, you just may have to put the jar in warm water to melt the coconut oil a little when it is time to use it.

This feels super luxurious on the skin and removes dead skin easily. It cleanses the body and uplifts the mind. Try it today in your shower and then journal about what you noticed immediately after the shower. I am usually better prepared to take on the rest of the day after this little ritual!

Tip: Follow up the routine with a lotion that you added a few drops of your personal oil to (from Day 4), it helps to moisturize the skin and keep the focus on personal wellness.

Preparing for Day 11

Each day there will be another (smaller) article detailing the current day and the next day, so if you are a planner like I am, you will have time to make the space.

Day 11 – Guiding Stones

Today we are going to use Rose Quartz and Obsidian with the body to remove stagnant energy and replace it with the swirling energy of compassion and care. Using our own intuition, we can guide ourselves to place the stones along the body or chakras that we feel need some extra attention (and sometimes this feels like a great tune up for all the chakras).

Supplies:

  • Rose Quartz stone
  • Obsidian Stone

Directions:

  1. We begin with the obsidian and guide it from the top of the head and down the body. Asking it to grab and absorb any energy that is no longer serving you. Take a few minutes with this. By the time you get to your feet it may feel so much heavier – that is okay, you can put it in a bag of salt to clear the energy out (toss the salt when done!).
  2. Now we do the same thing, but with the Rose Quartz. We are asking it to lend its energy to the parts of use that need greater compassion, openness, healing, and care. In most instances I can feel the swirling energy of Rose Quartz penetrate where I need it the most.

Journal about your experience with this, if there are any spaces where you noticed that you spent longer amounts of time with either stone, and how the energy of each stone feels to you.

12 Days of Selfcare ~ Day 9

Day 9 – Lay Your Head Down

Getting enough rest is crucial as a human. Where I lay my head for rest is a space I consider to be sacred. Creating a Sacred Pillow Pouch is a great way to practice sacred restful selfcare with plant allies. We can use plant allies that reinforce the elements of restfulness, dreams, calm, and the ability to navigate the liminal space between conscious and unconscious.

Supplies:

  • Lavender Buds
  • Bay Leaves
  • Mugwort (dried herb)
  • Small pouch

Directions:

Place each herb into your small pouch and whisper to it what your aims are. Once the herbs are in the pouch, ask them to work together in your favor. Place it in your pillowcase or under your pillow.

Vero Photoart via Unsplash

Additional Tips:

  • I have written on the Bay leaves if I need to have a specific outcome for a certain time, or if I am doing specific dream work related to time walking and goals.
  • Pulling the pouch out for a few minutes and breathing the herbs in has been a helpful routine to create a calm inner space before bedtime. Connecting to the herbs this way also allows for deeper relationship with them.

Day 8 -Banish the Bullsh*t

There are some days, despite our best efforts, that we really need to log off, log out, walk away, disengage, or throw salt at people. Sometimes that is also not feasible! We can create a Banish the Bullsh*t spray as a shield and vibration shifter. It is an act of self-care to recognize situations that are too much and are impacting you in a way that you do not consent to.

Supplies:

  • Small spray bottle
  • Rubbing alcohol (vodka works too though)
  • Spring Water
  • Essential Oils: Sage, Rosemary, & Lavender
Photo via Pixabay

Directions:

Take the (cleansed, purified, and blessed) spray bottle and fill ¼ of the way with alcohol. Add your spring water until your spray bottle is almost full.

Open each bottle of essential oil and whisper to it what you need from it.

Add:

  • 4 drops of Sage
  • 5 drops of Rosemary
  • 6 drops of Lavender

Whisper to them and tell them to bind together to Banish the Bullsh*t you encounter when you spray them.

Cap it, shake a little, have at it. Boundaries are circles of wellness that we create for ourselves so Banishing the BS is definitely self-care!

Day 7 – Self Care Deck

As a Witch, I love my tarot deck and my oracle deck. The way I love those decks is nothing compared to how much I love continuing to add to my own Self Care deck. I try to keep each item on a card to something that takes 5 minutes or less. However, there are also some wild cards in there where I can use them to go deeper like a cleansing bath or create a Rite of Joy for today. Utilize some construction paper, card stock, or 3×5 flash cards to create your very own deck!

12 Days of Selfcare ~ Day 6

Day 6 – Find Your Rhythm

As we find ourselves coursing through the days, there are some days that require a little extra motivation and spirited connection to self. Today is that day. Sometimes we forget that sound and certain vibrations are powerful, especially those of our own bodies in movement.

Spend some time searching your playlists or play the Find The Movement of Soul game to find a song that moves you to dance. Even slowly. The one that gives you tingles, gives you chills, or makes you want to sing along.

Find The Movement of Soul is to put on an unknown playlist or music station in the background and wait for the right one to come on. I have done this a lot and it always works. It may take an hour but then something plays that brings movement to my whole body!

Photo via Pixabay

Examples that I have found using the game above (I don’t recommend for little ears on some of these):

  • Days to Come – Seven Lions Featuring Fiora
  • Awaken Me – Abbi Spinner McBride
  • Blood in the Cut – K Flay (not kid friendly)
  • Rún- Skald
  • A Little Wicked – Valerie Broussard
  • Mi Guapo – Bebe
  • Desire – Meg Myers (not kid safe, this is more a reclaiming of sexual energy)
  • Deep End – Ruelle
  • Horns – Bryce Fox
  • Angry Too – Lola Blanc (not kid safe)

Before bed, use your journal to describe how this impacted your day. Could you tell a difference in the way you were able to connect to your body during the day?

12 Days of Selfcare ~ Day 5

Day 5 – Tattoo Touch Points

Creating personal sigils for increasing a certain energy in my auric field is a fabulous take on magic. It is even more fun when you craft more than one to use in conjunction with the others.

Today, light or turn your candle on. Close your eyes and breathe.

Breathe in through your nose for 5 seconds, hold it at the top for 2 seconds, and exhale for 7 seconds. Repeat 5 times.

Now think deeply about what energies you wish to increase. Let them come up for you, it may take a minute but they will come.

  • Do you need positive energy?
  • Do you need comfort?
  • Do you need to connect with others meaningfully?
  • Do you need to release or repel energy that you notice doesn’t belong to you?

Open your eyes. Pick one or two that come forward clearly and channel the energy into a sigil on the inside of each wrist.

Imagine that it is creating a force field of energy surrounding you with exactly what you need. If during the day you feel you need an extra boost, just touch each one to activate the intensity.

Before bed, use your journal to describe how this impacted your day. Could you tell a difference in the way you were able to connect to certain energies?

12 Days of Selfcare ~ Day 4

Day 4 – Personal Rejuvenation Oil

Some of the best magic I have ever encountered is olfactory magic. Our sense of smell is a way to time travel, to call upon someone, and to remember.

Today we are going to create a personal rejuvenation oil to uplift our sense of wellness and calm. I highly recommend creating an oil that speaks to you and brings you to a place of calm awareness. Before you begin, take a moment with each oil you plan on using. Maybe hold it to your heart so it can feel into what you need. Focus on allowing it to help you reach your desired state.

Photo by Ron Lach from Pexels

Here is a sample recipe:

In a small jar (make sure it has a lid), pour 4 TBSP of olive oil.

Add in (while holding your intention for each oil):

  • 10 drops of Lavender
  • 8 drops of Bergamot
  • 3 drops of Patchouli

To activate the calm and revitalizing properties, place lid on the jar and swirl the jar clockwise.

Place a drop on wrists and at the heart center. This creates a triangle of intention, whatever you are doing today will be connected to a rejuvenated sense of creativity and heart awareness.

Before bed, use your journal to describe how this impacted your day.

12 Days of Selfcare ~ Day 3

Day 3 – The Hygge Nook

For Day 3, we are going to envision our inner Hygge Nook or draw it out. “Hygge” is a Scandinavian term referring to a feeling of coziness or comfort in a moment or place. Many people are looking to do this as a lifestyle or create home environments that reflect Hygge. Grab your journal and a pen. Hide in the bathroom if you must. Light or turn your candle on.

Now drop your shoulders away from your ears and begin to breathe deeply in through the nose and exhale slower through the mouth. Repeat a few times.

Photo via Pixabay

Now envision or outline on paper what your inner Hygge Nook would like like.

  • Does it have fairy lights running along a wall?
  • Does it have Oil Lamps and incense? What does the incense smell like?
  • Is there a chaise with a big chunky knit blanket in your favorite color? What is the texture of the blanket? Does it feel like a velvety cloud? Is there a heavier weight to it? Does it feel like a warm hug when you wrap it around you?
  • Are there any plants or animals? What do they look like?
  • Is there any music?
  • Are there any windows, can you see outside? Are you actually outside, a Nook in the forest?

Continue to breathe and create your Hygge Nook, a place of calm, comfort, and coziness for a minute or two.

Before bed, use your journal to describe how this impacted your day. Feel free to revisit it as often as needed or create a life-sized version if you can!

Stay tuned!

12 Days of Selfcare ~ Day 2

Day 2 – The Breath

For Day 2, we are going to slow down again but focus on the journey of the breath. Just for 5 minutes. That is it. Even if it is in the bathroom where we can sometimes hide.

Hide a tea light in there, or a battery-operated candle, and light it or turn it on. Close your eyes and breathe.

Breathe in through the nose and picture the journey when it hits your nostrils. Imagine following the breath deeply into the body, through the lungs and through all the cells in your body. Feel the breath invigorating the body, pulling stress and tension away from you as you exhale. Repeat 5 times.

Maybe you can find a few times in the day to check in this way, to bring yourself into the journey of the breath, to release tension and reinvigorate through its release. But for today, we are just engaging in the act of being aware of the journey. Before bed, use your journal to describe how this impacted your day by just doing it once.
